OUR STORY
Lone Tree Throwers started during COVID with something simple — a few friends throwing bags in a buddy’s shop when there wasn’t much else to do. More people kept showing up, the games became more competitive, and most importantly, everyone kept having a good time.
Before long, we started traveling to play with other cornhole groups and learning how they ran their events. That eventually led to hosting fundraiser tournaments for our local high school booster club. Those tournaments grew into local leagues, more fundraisers, and eventually the formation of Lone Tree Throwers.

What began as a few friends throwing bags quickly grew into something much bigger. Local leagues led to more tournaments, and tournaments became opportunities to bring communities together and raise money for people and organizations that needed it.
Lone Tree Throwers eventually became involved with the American Cornhole League. As the club continued to grow, member Josh Fousek became an ACL Regional Director, opening the door to ACL Regional competition and larger events throughout Nebraska.
Along the way, we built a home for some of our biggest events at Grigsby's River Landing along the Platte River. It became home to the annual Platte River Throwdown — a tournament built around competition, friends and the reason we started throwing bags in the first place: having a good time.
WHY THE NAME LONE TREE?
WHY THE NAME LONE TREE?
Long before Central City had its current name, this area was known for a giant cottonwood tree that stood along the Platte River. Known simply as Lone Tree, it could reportedly be seen for miles and became an important landmark for travelers crossing Nebraska.
The Mormon Trail and the Omaha–Fort Kearny stage route passed near Lone Tree, and travelers often camped beneath its branches. The landmark became so well known that when a settlement began to grow nearby, it took the name Lone Tree. The community was later renamed Central City.
The original tree died in the 1860s, but its story lived on. In 1911, Merrick County residents erected a stone monument shaped like a tree trunk on the site once occupied by Lone Tree.
More than a century later, the Lone Tree name can still be found throughout our community. When it came time to name a cornhole group born right here in Central City, Lone Tree Throwers just made sense.
It connects where we are today with the history of the place we call home.

Cornhole may be what brought us together, but somewhere along the way it became about much more than throwing bags. Lone Tree Throwers has been fortunate to use the game we love to support our communities, help people in need, and bring people together.

Today, Lone Tree Throwers has grown far beyond those first nights throwing bags in a buddy's shop.
We host local leagues, community tournaments, fundraisers and major events throughout Nebraska. Through the American Cornhole League, we also organize the Mid-Nebraska Regional Series, bringing competitive cornhole to players throughout the region.
Our annual Platte River Throwdown has become one of our signature events, and in the 2026–27 season we're taking another step forward by hosting an official ACL Interstate Event — the Midwest Cornhole Clash.
The events have gotten bigger, but what started it all hasn't changed: good competition, good people and having a good time.
